EDGE OF WORLD RETREATS
JULY 2010
WHAT'S NEW
Edge of World Retreats is deeply saddened by the horrible destruction due to the recent oil spill. We are committed to donating 3% of our proceeds to help with the clean-up. We have teamed up with Oceana who has been working tirelessly since 2001 as the largest international organization for ocean conservation. To find out more about Oceana and their work, visit: www.oceana.org
Edge of World Retreats is proud to announce a new division: Custom Yoga Retreats! We are joining our global network and traveling spirit with yoga studios to create a personal, one-of-a-kind retreat experience for students and their teachers. Yoga gives us a vessel to reach deep into ourselves and stretch wide out into the world around us, increasing both physical, mental and spiritual awareness. Anything you can dream, we can do! We are very excited to broaden our horizons and share it with the yoga community in some of the most beautiful, enriching places on Earth. Stay tuned for upcoming retreats!
EoWR is excited to introduce a new series of trips entitled Edge of World Writers' Retreats. On a writers' retreat trip, participants travel with a professional writer who leads the group in a themed workshop. These workshops will serve to improve and foster both the craft and the creative energy of all retreat participants.
"Poets with History"
Writer: Jericho Brown
Location: Atlanta, GA
Dates: January 10-17, 2011
Our first trip will head to Atlanta, Georgia with award-winning poet Jericho Brown, for a workshop that utilizes the city's famous annual MLK Jr. day events as a backdrop. Using Marina Tsvetaeva's distinction "Poets with History" as our title, this workshop will speak to the ways in which historical research informs poetry. One important social function of poetry may be to document the subjectivity, if not the collective memory, of a people, a nation, and a time. We will ask what differences exist between history and memory, and we will shed light on how poetry historicizes little known events as well as how poets use history to transcend the weight of time.
"Dream of Paper: Discovering and Maintaining Voice and Vision"
Writer: Tina Chang
Location: Tibet
Dates: June 2011
The second trip in the Edge of World Writers' Retreat series will join Brooklyn's poet laureate, Tina Chang, for a workshop in Tibet. What is one's own voice and how is it developed, honed, sustained? How is story and memory sparked/inspired by place, location? How can one develop and sustain their identity through words? This generative workshop will strive to answer these questions for each participant, all while traveling in the highest region in the world, Tibet, rich in culture, breathtaking landscapes, and unique and friendly people.
"From the Outside In: Peeling Back the Layers of 'Other' in Poetry and Prose"
Writer: Tracy K. Smith
Location: Tanzania
Dates: July 2011
Check back soon for details on this forthcoming retreat/workshop with acclaimed writer Tracy K. Smith.
In order to spread the word about our new Writers' Series, Nick--one of our tour operators--will be embarking on a cross-country road trip to colleges across the US. 44 days, 30+ states, and almost 100 colleges! He needs your help to make it happen, though. You can start by checking out the road trip Facebook page here: www.facebook.com/NicksRoadTrip
TREADING LIGHTLY
At Edge of World Retreats we strongly believe in sustainable, ethical travel. We aim to tread lightly in our destinations--hopefully leaving the place a little bit better than we found it.
Edge of World Retreats educates our groups on conserving natural resources and supporting the local community as we move along. We try our very best to work with suppliers and operators that are ecologically conscious and active in community outreach. As travelers, we are devoted to encourage communities to maintain their sense of place and unique cultural identity. We achieve this by respecting local customs, using local guides and supporting locally owned businesses. Our
transformational journeys savor traditional foods, arts and music--reinforcing and economically supporting the cultural differences that make our world so beautiful. Our efforts strive to give back to the community. Please join us for your next adventure soon!
MEET THE TEAM
Anne Nagelvoort: Anne recently transplanted to sun soaked Southern California from the mountains of Colorado. Traveling borders on obsession for her. Throughout fifteen countries on 3 continents, she has sought out rich experiences--volunteering, teaching, patting tortillas with the locals--getting to the pulse of a community. Writing and teaching about food and wine has supported her travel habits and a dedicated yoga practice keeps her centered through it all. From the sweet spots of Anusara to raw prana flow, every moment since she has found her mat has been a blessing. Anne is beyond excited to be with Edge of World Retreats working with people to share and build transformative experiences and lifelong memories.

Nikolai Walker: Nick Walker was born and raised in sunny Southern California. At the University of San Diego he majored in English, minored in Business Administration, graduated summa cum laude in 2009, then promptly ran away to Japan, where he was living until quite recently. He enjoys travel, language, meeting new people, and he very seriously wants to hear your life story and be your new friend. He works one-on-one with trip facilitators to build the kinds of life-altering excursions that Edge of World Retreats is all about. Feel free to contact him anytime at nick@edgeofworldretreats.com
